Open reconstruction of ancient Palmyra

NEWPALMYRA is a community project to virtually reconstruct the architecture and cultural heritage of Palmyra, Syria, and share the results under open licenses.

The project continues the work begun by Bassel Khartabil, who documented Palmyra from 2005. After his arrest in 2012 and reported execution in 2017, a global community carried the work forward. The first 3D model on Wikipedia was the Lion of Al-Lat (Asad Al-Lat).

We focus on virtual reconstruction — open 3D models, reference photos, and community tools — not on-site rebuilding.
